The reason why the guitar is so popular is due to the rise of its use in modern and popular music. Whether it’s rock and roll, blues or folk. Guitar music is everywhere.
If you are wondering your child would suit learning the guitar. Here are a few questions for you to ask yourself to help you decide. Along with a few other considerations too.
The few considerations first:
1. Is your child interested in learning guitar? The most important question is, does your child want to play the guitar? If they have shown an interest, whether it's guitar music or the guitar itself, then that’s a great start. Otherwise, if they are only focused on sports and have no interest in staying indoors. Or in learning any musical instrument. It may be difficult to encourage to sit down for long enough to play.
2. How old is your child? With all instruments, there’s an age that experts recommend that a child starts to learn.
From our experience, eight years old is the perfect age to start on guitar. They are old enough to be able to take in the information due to a higher attention span. They also have the dexterity for coordination of both hands.
Of course, there are exceptions to the rule. Eight is what we’ve found from our experience. They can the ability to make a lot of progress once they reach that age. This saves a lot of time and money in comparison to starting them at a younger age.
Eight years old is also young enough still that they can grow to love guitar, and if they want to take it seriously. Whether they want to perform or do song writing, or drama. They have a great start under their belt.
3. What sort of music does your child enjoy listening? There is a huge variety of music out there. While a lot of the music has guitar: Rock, blues, jazz, pop, folk, soul, acoustic, reggae. There are also some genres that don’t lend itself as well to guitars such as hip hop and RnB. If your child likes sort of music, they might enjoy learning about the electronic keyboard. Or learning how to rap more than playing the guitar.
For anything else, guitar is a great start to explore many musical genres.
